Follow Our Journey: Delta 2s, Day 15

The Deltas have been hiking, swimming, and glass-blowing it up here at Saba. After a nice sail to Saba for our Challenge Day, the students got to rest after a whole day of taking over the boat. They all worked together well, problem-solved, and made it here safely and we are very proud of them. Yesterday morning, we woke up excitedly to explore the Dutch island of Saba, as staff call it, ‘Saba Day’, since there is so much to do here.
Sea Saba, a diving company based here in Saba, picked us up from our mooring field at Ladder Bay, welcomed and escorted us to Fort Bay, on the other side of the island, to go ashore for land activities. There is only one way to access the island from the bottom, as most of the towns here are based in the valleys between the mountains above. How neat is that!? We thanked them and got a taxi to Windwardside, the town with the highest elevation here on Saba, and where we do most of our exploring!
One group went with our captains, Luca and Mady, to do the ‘cloud forest’ hike to the top of Saba, and one group went with our Program Director, Max, and me (Lilly, Luca’s mate) to visit Jobean’s Glass Blowing shop, a Saba favorite. Originally from the United States, Jobean moved down here to practice glass-blowing and teach others how to as well. Jobean is a woman who has been teaching glass blowing for over 20 years here on Saba, and we love paying her visits and letting her teach us! What a treat.
After both groups were through, we did a switch-around and the group that went hiking got to glass-blow, and vice versa. Both groups had a load of fun and got to see and do so much! We ate lunch in town, and later, got escorted back to boats for some fun in the water. We got to snorkel around our boats, as well as swim with turtles that reside here. It was an amazing experience, getting to swim close by with marine life. Our kids were so elated!
We later had dinner, our daily meetings and boat clean, and enjoyed a quiet night on board reading, playing Uno, and eventually, heading to bed for some much-needed sleep. Today, August 2, we are headed to St. Martin to switch boats and get ready for our overnight sail back to the BVIs!
