The day that we’ve been waiting for is finally upon us. Our staff has been hard at work getting ready for the best time of the year: THE SUMMER SEASON! The docks of Hodges Creek Marina have been buzzing with eager staff members ready to meet the kids and start the Earlies’ program. It’s safe to say June 10th is one of the busiest days of the year for all of us at Sail Caribbean (a good busy, of course). We have been doing everything from cleaning, packing, running errands, airport duty, and prepping the boats for a summer of fun in the sun.

Myself, Addie, Nora, David, Lindy, Cam, and Joey participated in what we call ‘airport duty’ where we make our way to St. Thomas and ensure the kids get to where they need to be. The kids started to arrive in St. Thomas around 11 AM, and our crew on ‘airport duty’ waved our signature yellow SC flags excitedly around the St. Thomas Airport baggage claim, ready to greet the campers as they filtered in. The last flight of the day landed around 4 PM, and the last batch of kids and staff caught the 5:30 PM fast ferry back to home base.

Once the ferry arrived in Tortola, and once customs and immigration forms were completed, our Earlies students officially arrived in the BVI ready to meet the staff waiting for them at Hodges. Dinner was served buffet-style right outside of Dock A. Campers then got to enjoy their first meal on the boats. Campers, mates, and captains had their first boat meeting and almost immediately after, everyone was set up in their sleeping positions and fast asleep after a long day of traveling.

The greatest challenge during the program was staying entertained during the quarantine period. Not being able to leave your boat and not having a phone, which was a crutch against boredom, it was difficult at first to stay entertained.
