Waking up after a stormy night on the docks at Scrub Island, we felt a sense of anticipation in the air as we prepared for what promised to be an exhilarating day. The morning started with our challenge day briefing—a crucial meeting where our program director and fleet captain meticulously reviewed the navigation plans and student responsibilities. Our fearless skippers listened attentively as they were briefed, ready to lead their crews through the day’s adventures.

The students, brimming with excitement and a touch of nervousness, were prepared to take on all the responsibilities on board their boats for the entire day. Challenge day is a special tradition where the campers handle every task without the help of their counselors, putting their skills and teamwork to the ultimate test.

As the briefing concluded, the students sprang into action. They prepared a hearty breakfast, fueling up for the demanding tasks ahead. They then dedocked their boats, demonstrating their growing confidence and skill! The next challenge awaited them on the open water as they raised and trimmed the sails, setting their course towards the Bitter End Yacht Club on Virgin Gorda.

Navigating upwind into the swell was no easy feat, but the students rose to the occasion, their teamwork and determination evident in every maneuver. They took turns at the helm, adjusted the sails, and strategized their route, all while maintaining a steady course. Amidst the demanding navigation, they also found time to prepare burgers for lunch!

The high wind made the mooring ball pickup particularly tricky, but with perseverance and skillful handling, the students managed to secure their boats. With the boats safely moored, we eagerly went ashore to explore the vibrant surroundings. The afternoon was a delightful mix of relaxation and adventure as we enjoyed cold drinks, experienced the thrill of Hobie cat sailing, and spent ample time lounging in hammocks, soaking in the beautiful setting!

Finally, as the day drew to a close, we gathered for a well-deserved dinner. The evening was spent debriefing our challenge day, sharing stories of triumphs and lessons learned. With the day’s excitement behind us, we settled into a quiet night on board, reflecting on our accomplishments and looking forward to the adventures that awaited us in the days to come.

The greatest challenge during the program was staying entertained during the quarantine period. Not being able to leave your boat and not having a phone, which was a crutch against boredom, it was difficult at first to stay entertained.
