The Alpha fleet met up with Mega fleet (what we affectionately call our 3 week programs that travel on the water together, to work as a team with the Royal Fleet Auxiliary with the common goal of cleaning up Cane Garden Bay! CGB is a location that got hit extremely hard from Hurricane Irma and is still ways away from getting back on their feet.

The day all started with a big breakfast and packing lunches for the active day ahead. We started the clean at 9:00a.m. to get all the moving parts organized, which included beach clean areas, snorkel clean areas, and preparing staff divers for their part in filling lift bags underwater to take up bigger debris from the sea floor.

Students rotated through clean up stations all throughout the bay, the biggest hit being surface support for the underwater dive cleaners. By the end of the day, 4 out of the 7 huge dumpsters of the day were filled thanks to our hard work and the coordination of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary and the Association Of Reef Keepers – BVI.

We treated ourselves to ice cream onshore after a long day of service. A relaxed night on board was enjoyed by all, as students also learned they would be participating in another big event tomorrow … RACE DAY!

The greatest challenge during the program was staying entertained during the quarantine period. Not being able to leave your boat and not having a phone, which was a crutch against boredom, it was difficult at first to stay entertained.
