Alpha and Tango 2: Day 2 – Marina Cay

By wpdev July 13, 2022

Alphango 2 fleet began the day around 7:00 at Hodges Creek Marina after a (mostly) restful first night aboard the boats! Breakfast was a full buffet of bagels and cream cheese, cereal, and fruit. After cleanup, we went to hear the famous “Mike Talk” to kick off program and instill some goals in mind.

Heading back to our boats, we went over the ins and outs of living and working on a boat, and awaited our departure calls to head to Marina Cay.

As for the curriculum, we discussed a de-docking plan and our skipper of the day assigned positions. While underway, we learned how to raise the mainsail and unfurl the jib, and our skipper honed in her steering skills on our upwind sail. Once at Marina Cay, we also practiced picking up a mooring ball – Aquarelle got it on the first try!

After lunch, students hopped in the water for their swim test. Once proving their ability, we swam, snorkeled, set up hammocks, and relaxed, settling into boat life.

Around 4:30, captains and mates demonstrated proper ocean shower technique, and at 5:00 dinner prep began. The menu had quinoa Buddha bowls on the lineup, but Aquarelle’s chef of the day took the reins on tacos instead.

After dinner, boats got briefed on the daily cleaning routine and crews got to know each other a bit better before boat meeting and power down.

Today was jam packed with learning new things and we’re stoked to get rolling with the rest of the program!

The greatest challenge during the program was staying entertained during the quarantine period. Not being able to leave your boat and not having a phone, which was a crutch against boredom, it was difficult at first to stay entertained.
