Alpha 1 & Tango 1: Day 3 – Diamond Cay National Park

By wpdev June 30, 2021

Day 3

Students were up and eating a breakfast of “egg-in-a-boat” by 8:30 am. After cleaning up, they headed out for a morning snorkel. Turtles, squid and other sea creatures were spotted!

By 11 am students were learning how to up-anchor and were off to Diamond Cay near Jost Van Dyke. Throughout the day, students learned:

  • Points of Sail: a sailing craft’s direction of travel under sail in relation to the true wind direction over the surface
  • Tacking: a maneuver to turn the bow of the boat through the wind so that the wind changes from one side of the boat to the other

Other highlights of the day were learning the importance of hydration by playing silly hydration games and making use of our new waterproof card decks.

After learning how to tie up to a mooring ball, students had fun splashing around in the water and checking out the new views for the night. Next up were showers and loaded nachos for dinner (happy Taco Tuesday)! As the sun was setting, each boat created their Full Value Contracts which lay out the rules for the boat and often include principles of kindness, open communication and teamwork.

The greatest challenge during the program was staying entertained during the quarantine period. Not being able to leave your boat and not having a phone, which was a crutch against boredom, it was difficult at first to stay entertained.
