Day 9 began with a leisurely morning. For breakfast, the crew cut pineapple, toasted bagels, ate yogurts, oatmeal and made peanut butter toast! After breakfast, students took turns turtling along the beautiful cliffs and sailing Colgate 26’s in the Sir Frances Drake channel. Turtling was particularly exciting this morning because a turtle was brought to the surface! Students had the opportunity to collect measurements and take pictures for scientific research that will be shared with the local fisheries department to track the BVIs turtle population. These findings are crucial to their data base and efforts to track and protect the species.
After this exciting morning, the crew returned back to their boats for lunch preparation of mac n’ cheese and to prepare for an afternoon of dives. Those who weren’t diving circumnavigated Salt Island and rejoined the divers later on anchor at Salt Island.
We flowed into our usual evening mix of dinner preparation and enthusiastic chatter while gobbling up our meal among our crew members. Immediately after, our divers participated in a night dive and our non-divers followed suit with a beautiful sunset hike. After these evening activities, students returned to their boats for hot chocolate, boat meeting and power down!
