Alpha 1 2015 – Day 7

Today, Aidan was our captain, Oliver was our navigator and Kenzie was our mate and we were sailing from Salt Island to Nanny Cay. We woke up to a great buffet breakfast and then we all went to our separate activities. The divers Dean, Drew, Katie and Hazel finally completed their confined water skills and were able to do their first open water dive. The first open water dive was at Cistern Rock next to Cooper Island and their second was at the RMS Rhone wreck. When you’re down there, all divers must rub lucky porthole number 26, as it was the porthole the only survivor escaped through. Kenzie and Betsy began their DSD (Discover Scuba Diving) course as well today. Meanwhile, Matt and Oliver went ashore to Salt Island to do a hike. Afterwards, they snorkeled over the RMS Rhone while the divers were diving below.

Everyone reconvened on the boat for lunch, after which we set sail. It was a broad reach almost the whole way there, so we got to practice our down-wind sailing. As we approached Nanny Cay, our dinghy got untied from our boat but our skipper, Aiden, did a great job of getting it back. Well done Aiden! Afterwards, we docked successfully and we all worked well together in ensuring it went well.

Tonight, we had a great dinner at the restaurant beside the marina called The Peg Leg Landing Restaurant. It was great not to have any cleaning up to do. It was a great end to the day. Today our crew did a great job of docking, but we need to work on focusing as a team. The curriculum covered was parts of the sail, right of way and docking. Our miracle moment was when we finally got to use the amazing showers at the marina.
